Chapter 9 - THE NIGHT JONAH STOPPED BREATHINGIt happened at 3:11 a.m.

Sudden respiratory distress.
Staff moved instantly.
Lawson was forced out during emergency stabilization.
He stood behind glass.
Hands bloody where his fingernails cut his palms.
Clara remained beside him.
“You said stay with them.”
“I can't go in.”
“I know.”
“What do I do?”
“Stay here.”
He laughed bitterly.
“Always sit. Stay. Wait.”
“Yes.”
“I hate your methods.”
“I know.”
Twenty-seven minutes.
Longest of Lawson’s life.
Then Priya came out.
“Stabilized.”
Lawson nearly collapsed.
“What happened?”
“Treatment complication.”
“Will he—”
“We don't know.”
There.
The phrase nobody wanted.
Clara went into the room later.
Jonah opened his eyes.
“You came.”
“Yes.”
“Dad?”
“Outside.”
“Why?”
“Because doctors were working.”
Jonah frowned.
“Tell him come.”
Lawson entered.
He sat.
Jonah whispered:
“Don't leave.”
Lawson held his hand.
“I won't.”
This time nobody corrected him.
For that night, he stayed.
By morning Jonah improved.
But the incident changed Lawson.
He called his attorneys.
“Finish cooperation.”
Prescott stared.
“All of it?”
“All.”
“You could lose control.”
“I already almost lost what matters.”
No more delay.
