Chapter 8 - CROSBY VANECrosby finally contacted Lawson directly.

Video call.

No location.

“You look tired.”

Lawson stared.

“You threatened children.”

“I threatened you.”

“You used children.”

Crosby smiled.

“Same thing.”

Once Lawson would have answered with murder.

Now:

“Your accounts are frozen.”

Crosby’s smile disappeared slightly.

“Some.”

“Your distributor cooperated.”

Silence.

“Your Nevada company.”

More silence.

“Your judge.”

Crosby leaned closer.

“You're working with federal prosecutors.”

“Yes.”

“Traitor.”

Lawson almost laughed.

“To what?”

“The code.”

“There is no code.”

Crosby’s eyes hardened.

“Your father would spit on you.”

“My father is dead.”

“Your empire will die.”

Lawson looked toward the medical wing.

“Good.”

That was the sentence Crosby did not understand.

Crosby had built his entire strategy on Lawson loving power.

If Lawson no longer wanted the throne—

what leverage remained?

The call ended.

Prescott stared.

“You meant that?”

“Yes.”

“What happens to us?”

“You become legitimate.”

Prescott looked horrified.

“Taxes?”

“Yes.”

“Absolutely not.”

Lawson laughed.

For the first time, life after organized crime sounded possible.

Complicated.

Dangerous.

But possible.

Crosby was eventually arrested not in a shootout but at a private airfield carrying forged travel documents.

Lawson almost felt cheated.

Clara said:

“Healthy development.”

He told her to leave.

She brought coffee.

The twins continued treatment.

The war outside quieted.

May you like

The war inside their bodies did not.

And then Jonah crashed.
