Chapter 4 - THE NIGHT OF THE WOLVESCrosby attacked before the test results returned.

The original file places the assault during the blizzard, with the Mercer estate breached while Clara shields Jonah and Blythe.

This time Lawson had another plan.

The estate locked down.

Steel partitions sealed the medical wing.

Clara remained with the twins.

Prescott coordinated security.

Lawson did not charge into the foyer seeking revenge.

He wanted attackers alive.

Evidence.

Names.

Crosby had always expected Lawson to kill first.

That expectation became a weakness.

Gunfire cracked outside.

Muted by reinforced walls.

Jonah began crying.

Blythe grabbed Clara’s sleeve.

“Are they coming?”

“No.”

“How do you know?”

Clara looked at the blast door.

She did not.

So she said:

“The door is strong.”

Honest.

Then:

“And your dad is doing everything he can.”

Jonah stared.

“Will he kill them?”

Clara stopped.

Children knew more than adults thought.

She sat.

“Your father has done things I don't agree with.”

“Bad things?”

“Yes.”

Blythe looked frightened.

“Is Dad bad?”

“No.”

Clara chose carefully.

“People are not only one thing.”

Outside, Lawson stood inside the security command center.

Prescott looked at him.

“Three inside the outer perimeter.”

“Hold fire unless necessary.”

“Who are you?”

“Shut up.”

A vehicle breached the gate.

Security disabled it.

Attackers fled.

Two were captured.

One carried a phone.

Messages from Crosby.

Instructions.

Payments.

And something worse.

Photograph.

Jonah and Blythe through the east-wing window.

Taken from inside the estate weeks earlier.

The leak had not been one technician.

Someone else.

Closer.

Lawson stared at the image.

His children asleep.

His house.

His fortress.

No protection.

He looked at Prescott.

“Who had access?”

“Staff.”

“Family.”

“Doctors.”

“Me.”

Prescott paused.

“And Odette.”

Lawson’s expression changed.

Odette had managed his household since before Jonah and Blythe were born.

Trusted.

Almost family.

No.

He refused the instinct.

Evidence first.

Clara’s influence again.

They searched access logs.

The photograph originated from an old maintenance tablet.

Signed out under Odette’s credentials.

But security footage showed another person using it.

Dr. Yates.

Lawson’s face hardened.

Clara had defended the possibility that Yates was not malicious.

Now evidence suggested otherwise.

But why?

Money?

Crosby?

Or something else?

The blast door opened at dawn.

Lawson walked into the medical suite.

The source story’s first dawn shows Jonah asking for food and both children displaying renewed engagement after Clara’s first night.

Here, the miracle remained smaller.

And therefore more meaningful.

Jonah was awake.

“Dad.”

Lawson crossed the room.

“I’m here.”

“Did you leave?”

“Yes.”

“Come back?”

“Yes.”

Jonah nodded.

“Okay.”

Blythe asked:

“Can I eat?”

Lawson froze.

Clara smiled.

“Maybe a little.”

Dr. Raman approved soft food.

A few spoonfuls.

Nothing dramatic.

But after days of refusing almost everything, it mattered.

Then Priya entered holding laboratory results.

Lawson stood.

Clara stopped breathing.

Priya looked at them.

“The markers are compatible enough for us to discuss enrollment.”

Possibility.

Real.

Fragile.

Lawson looked at Clara.

She had tears in her eyes.

He understood.

This was why she came.

Not because she believed touch cured leukemia.

Because she knew a door might still exist.

“You knew.”

Clara wiped her face.

“I suspected.”

“You hid it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn't want you buying hope before doctors confirmed it.”

He stared.

“You had no right.”

“No.”

She accepted it.

Then:

“But I would do it again.”

Lawson almost laughed.

Of course she would.

Priya interrupted.

“If everyone is finished being emotionally dysfunctional, I need signatures.”

For the first time in months, Lawson laughed.

A real laugh.

Jonah smiled.

Blythe did too.

And outside the medical wing, Dr. Yates was being escorted into an interview room.

Because while hope had entered the house—

so had proof that someone trusted by the Mercers had been helping Crosby reach the children.
