Chapter 4 - THE TUNNEL UNDER MY HOUSEMiller made the decision.

“We leave.”

My house was surrounded.

Local backup wasn't coming.

Dad knew an old storm tunnel ran beneath the pantry.

I had forgotten it existed.

Arthur hadn't.

We moved.

Lily in my arms.

Dad’s wheelchair.

Evidence bag.

Recorder.

Shipping files.

Behind us, someone shouted.

“They’re moving!”

Gunfire shattered glass.

Lily screamed.

I covered her head.

Miller forced open the cellar hatch.

We descended.

The tunnel smelled of mud and rust.

Dad’s wheelchair barely fit.

Miller pushed.

I carried Lily.

She whispered:

“Daddy, are monsters following us?”

“No.”

I lied.

“They're not getting you.”

That part I meant.

After ten minutes we emerged by the river.

Cold air.

Dark trees.

Vanguard’s warehouse glowed across the valley.

Miller pulled out a satellite phone.

“We need state police.”

Then headlights appeared.

Black SUV.

I pulled Lily behind me.

Miller raised his gun.

A man stepped out.

Derek.

My brother carried a leather satchel.

“Don't shoot!”

Miller shouted:

“Hands up!”

Derek dropped the bag.

“Alex, please.”

I wanted to hit him.

Instead:

“What is that?”

May you like

He looked at me.

“The reason Clara died.”
