Chapter 7 - The Downfall at Dawn

The next morning, the financial world woke up to a seismic shockwave.
By 7:00 a.m., major news networks and financial dailies were broadcasting breaking headlines: Whitmore Foundation Assets Frozen Amid Massive Embezzlement and Fraud Investigation Involving Billionaire Philanthropist Margaret Whitmore.
I sat at the massive marble kitchen island in Richard's estate, sipping coffee while watching a live news broadcast on a sleek wall-mounted display. Footage showed reporters swarming the iron gates of the Whitmore mansion, shouting questions at bewildered estate staff as federal investigators carrying cardboard boxes marched up the grand staircase.
Margaret Whitmore appeared on screen for a brief, frantic second as she was escorted out onto the front steps by two federal agents, shielding her face from the flashing camera bulbs with a designer handbag—a bag whose credit card had undoubtedly just been declined.
"They can't do this!" Margaret screamed at the reporters, her voice cracking with unhinged fury. "This is a conspiracy! A malicious, slanderous attack orchestrated by a bitter, worthless former servant and her bought-and-paid-for billionaire lapdog!"
The cameras flashed relentlessly, capturing the complete, catastrophic collapse of her decades-long facade of untouchable power and prestige.
Across the island, Richard set down his coffee mug, chuckling dryly. "Well, she's keeping her signature charm right up until the end."
I looked at him, feeling a profound sense of weight lifting off my shoulders. The chains that had bound me to that estate for six agonizing years had finally shattered into dust.
"Thank you, Richard," I said softly, reaching across the marble to touch his hand. "I don't know how I'll ever repay you for this."
Richard turned his hand over, his fingers intertwining gently with mine. His gray eyes softened, losing their corporate sharpness entirely.
"You don't owe me anything, Emily," he said, his voice dropping into a warm, intimate register. "Watching you stand up to her yesterday... seeing the fierce, unbreakable love you have for your daughters... you saved me just as much as I saved you. You brought life back into this empty house."
Before I could answer, the sound of tiny, pattering footsteps echoed down the hallway.
"Mommy! Mr. Richard!"
Little Lily burst into the kitchen, followed closely by Grace and Olivia, who were wearing brand-new, colorful dresses and laughing brightly.
"Look what Mrs. Gable gave us for breakfast!" Lily squealed, holding up a plate piled high with fluffy pancakes covered in strawberries and whipped cream. "Can we eat outside by the ocean?"
May you like
Richard laughed out loud—a rich, booming sound that I had never heard from him before—and scooped Lily up into his arms, spinning her around as she giggled uncontrollably.
"We can eat anywhere you want, princess," Richard smiled, looking over Lily's head at me and Olivia, who beamed with happiness.
