Chapter 6 - Gathering the Evidence

The sun had dipped below the horizon, painting the Pacific sky in vibrant shades of violet and gold, but inside Richard’s private study, the atmosphere was strictly business.

The room was lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, a massive oak desk covered in legal documents, and a large digital display glowing softly against the wall. Richard stood before the screen, tapping a sleek tablet as financial charts, bank routing numbers, and scanned legal documents flickered into view.

I sat across from him in a deep leather armchair, holding a warm cup of herbal tea that Mrs. Gable had insisted I drink. Olivia, Grace, and Lily were fast asleep upstairs in a magnificent guest suite that looked like something straight out of a fairy tale, surrounded by brand-new clothes and mountains of stuffed animals Mrs. Gable had hurriedly purchased.

"Look at this," Richard said, tapping the screen to highlight a complex web of offshore accounts routed through the Cayman Islands and Switzerland.

I leaned forward, squinting at the financial data. "What am I looking at?"

"This is Michael's true life insurance payout and the liquidation of his tech startup shares," Richard explained, his voice laced with restrained disgust. "When Michael died, the payout was eight point five million dollars. Margaret claimed he died bankrupt and that the insurance policy was voided due to a technicality in his employment contract."

"A technicality," I repeated bitterly. "That's what Thomas Vance told me. He said the company clawed back every penny."

"The company never clawed back a dime," Richard said, bringing up a signed document with Thomas Vance's signature clearly stamped at the bottom. "Instead, Thomas routed the funds directly into a shell corporation controlled exclusively by Margaret Whitmore. From there, she distributed the money into private investment portfolios and real estate holdings under her own name."

He paused, turning to look at me with intense focus. "She didn't just take your home, Emily. She stole your children's future. She made you believe you were a beggar dependent on her charity, while sitting on a multi-million-dollar fortune that legally belonged to you and your daughters."

A cold, heavy numbness settled over me, quickly replaced by a white-hot fury. For six years, I had scrubbed her floors until my fingers bled, enduring humiliation, starvation, and constant psychological torture, believing I was paying off a debt that never existed. I had starved myself so my girls could have an extra piece of bread, while Margaret lived like an absolute queen on stolen wealth.

"How fast can we move?" I asked, my voice dangerously calm.

Richard's lips curved into a sharp, approving smile. "The legal team I retained has already filed an emergency injunction freezing all Whitmore Foundation assets and locking down Margaret's personal accounts. By tomorrow morning, her credit cards will decline, her mansion accounts will be frozen, and the board of directors will receive copies of her financial fraud."

"She won't go down quietly," I warned, knowing Margaret's ruthless tenacity all too well. "She has powerful friends in politics, law enforcement, and society. She'll claim it's a malicious smear campaign by a disgruntled, penniless former employee."

"Let her try," Richard replied smoothly, walking over to his desk and picking up a heavy leather-bound ledger. "By tomorrow afternoon, the media will have the full story. And by tomorrow night, Margaret Whitmore will find out what it feels like to have absolutely nothing."
