Chapter 5 - VANESSA BREAKS FIRSTVanessa lasted nine days.

Then Eleanor stopped paying her lawyer.
That was when Vanessa realized something.
Eleanor never intended to protect her.
The plan had always contained a sacrifice.
If everything succeeded, Vanessa petitioned for temporary guardianship.
If things failed?
She became the violent stepmother acting alone.
Eleanor remained shocked grandmother.
Vanessa panicked.
She contacted Nathan.
He refused private contact.
Lawyers arranged a meeting.
Vanessa arrived without makeup.
No jewelry.
She looked smaller.
“I didn't mean to knock the tooth out.”
Nathan stared.
“That's your opening?”
She cried.
“I slapped her. I know.”
“Why?”
Vanessa looked down.
“Your mother told me you needed to lose control.”
“And you agreed?”
“She said it would only be a scene.”
“You hit a child.”
“I know.”
“Again?”
Vanessa's face changed.
There.
Nathan saw it.
“Again?”
She closed her eyes.
“The chair.”
His hands clenched.
“What chair?”
Vanessa began crying.
Six weeks earlier, Mia was eating breakfast.
Vanessa became angry because Mia spilled cereal.
She jerked the chair backward.
Mia fell.
Her mouth struck the table.
The dental injury.
Vanessa told Mia not to tell Nathan.
Then Eleanor learned about it.
Instead of protecting Mia, she recognized leverage.
If Vanessa could be made dependent on Eleanor's silence, she became useful.
Eleanor owned Vanessa from that day onward.
Nathan stared.
“So my mother knew you hurt her before the party.”
“Yes.”
“And used it.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you leave?”
Vanessa whispered:
“Because I wanted the marriage.”
Nathan almost laughed.
“The marriage?”
“The house. You. The life.”
Finally.
Truth.
Not love alone.
Access.
Status.
Security.
Then Vanessa handed over messages.
Hundreds.
Eleanor instructing.
Coaching.
Provoking.
One:
Make sure Nathan sees it himself.
Another:
If he starts shouting, don't calm him down.
And finally:
Once he loses control, we move on guardianship immediately.
Nathan read that line twice.

The trap was no longer theory.
It had instructions.
