Chapter 4 - ELEANOR'S BOARDCole Properties began with Nathan's grandfather.

Hotels.

Commercial real estate.

Luxury residential development.

When Caroline died, her shares passed to Mia.

Nathan exercised voting authority as guardian.

Combined with his own holdings, Nathan controlled enough votes to block Eleanor.

Eleanor hated that.

For years she called it temporary.

“Eventually Mia's shares should return to adult management.”

Nathan corrected her every time.

“They belong to Mia.”

Eleanor smiled.

“She's five.”

Exactly.

To Eleanor, children couldn't own power.

Adults owned power on their behalf.

Meaning her.

Then Nathan learned Eleanor had approached another trustee.

She asked:

“What happens if Nathan becomes subject to a behavioral evaluation?”

Behavioral.

Not medical.

Not financial.

Anger.

The entire plan depended on framing Nathan as unstable.

He had helped by kicking the table.

But the video also contained context.

His daughter's tooth on the floor.

Vanessa's slap.

Eleanor's insult.

Context didn't erase his behavior.

It complicated the narrative.

Nathan decided to do something nobody expected.

He issued a written statement through counsel.

I lost control and overturned a table. I regret doing so, particularly in front of my daughter. I will cooperate fully with any evaluation requested.

Eleanor was furious.

Thomas smiled.

“Why?”

Nathan asked.

“Because she wanted denial.”

“What difference does that make?”

“People building a case around your lack of control need you to behave like someone who lacks accountability.”

Nathan understood.

Admitting his mistake removed one of their weapons.

Not all.

Enough.
