Chapter 9 - LILY TURNS FIVELily's fifth birthday was small.

No giant family gathering.
No expensive garden.
Six children.
Cupcakes.
A magician who accidentally dropped a fake rabbit.
Lily laughed until she hiccupped.
Ethan watched from the kitchen.
Naomi arrived late carrying no legal documents.
“Today I'm just here for cake.”
“Good.”
The audit had finished.
Most assets were recovered or secured through litigation and insurance, though not without losses.
Robert faced serious legal consequences.
Tessa entered an agreement requiring accountability and cooperation.
Diane lived separately and saw Lily only under conditions Ethan and professionals considered safe.
None of it felt victorious.
Then Lily ran toward Ethan.
“Daddy!”
He crouched.
She jumped into his arms.
No bruises.
No fear.
“Did you see my cake?”
“I did.”
“It's purple.”
“Very purple.”
“Purple tastes better.”
“Scientifically?”
“Yes.”
He laughed.
Then she asked something unexpected.
“Is Aunt Tessa bad?”
Ethan thought carefully.
“No.”
Lily frowned.
“She hurt me.”
“Yes.”
“Then?”
“She did something bad.”
Lily waited.
“And she has to be responsible for it.”
“Is Uncle Robert bad?”
Ethan smiled sadly.
“People are more complicated than that.”
Lily considered this for approximately three seconds.
Then:
“Can I have more cake?”
Much easier question.
“Yes.”
Healing didn't require Lily to understand financial crimes.

She needed birthdays that felt safe.
That was enough.
