Chapter 5 - TESSA CHANGES SIDESTessa asked for a meeting.
Ethan refused.
Naomi attended instead.
Tessa arrived wearing sunglasses despite the cloudy weather.
Her cheek had healed.
Her confidence hadn't.
Robert had stopped answering her calls.
Then she discovered why.
His legal response blamed everything on her.
He claimed Tessa had independently played an inappropriate prank on Lily.
He denied instructing her.
He denied touching Lily.
He described Ethan's reaction as evidence of “longstanding aggression between siblings.”
Tessa finally understood.
She was the disposable piece.
So she brought messages.
Robert:
Keep him angry.
Another:
Mention Emily if necessary.
Ethan felt sick reading that one.
His dead wife.
Robert had suggested using her name to provoke him.
Then:
Once he loses control publicly, Diane can take Lily for a few months.
There it was.
Tessa had agreed because Robert promised to clear $140,000 of her debts.
She insisted she never intended Lily to be injured.
Ethan didn't care about the distinction.
“You grabbed a four-year-old.”
Tessa cried.
“I know.”
“You terrified her.”
“I know.”
“You laughed when I carried her back.”
Tessa lowered her head.
Why laugh?
Because Robert had instructed her to make Ethan angrier.
Even after Lily was injured.
Even after the plan had gone too far.
Tessa kept performing.
Ethan wanted to hate her cleanly.
Reality complicated that too.
Tessa had done something terrible.
Then she provided evidence.
Cooperation didn't erase participation.
Naomi made sure Ethan understood that.
No heroes manufactured afterward.
Just choices.
Some bad.
