Chapter 14 - WHAT DANIEL UNDERSTOOD TOO LATEDaniel never watched the security footage again.
He did not need to.
The scene remained in his memory.
Margaret in the water.
Camille above her.
That sentence:
Once you are out of the picture, Daniel will rely on me completely.
At first it created rage.
Then guilt.
Then humiliation.
Eventually—
understanding.
Camille had believed dependence meant love.
If Margaret disappeared, Daniel would have nobody else to trust.
If Camille controlled the money, the house and the emotional aftermath, she would become necessary.
Necessary meant safe.
Or so she believed.
But love built by removing everybody else was not security.
It was isolation.
Daniel learned this too late for his first marriage.
Not too late for the second.
Years later Rachel asked:
“Do you want my opinion?”
“Always.”
“Dangerous answer.”
“I reserve the right to ignore you.”
“Healthy.”
“And annoying.”
“Also healthy.”
They laughed.
Daniel loved that.
A marriage in which disagreement survived dinner.
Nobody needed possession.
Nobody needed dependency.

That became more valuable to him than the estate Camille once believed would secure everything.
