Chapter 10 - ELENA LEAVES THE MANSIONElena’s last day as a Vance employee arrived on a rainy Friday.

Leo was almost two.
He understood enough to know bags meant departure.
Elena packed her uniform.
Two pairs of black shoes.
The small clock beside her bed.
Photographs.
Marcus stood awkwardly in the doorway.
“You can keep the room.”
“No.”
“As long as you need.”
“I have an apartment.”
“I know.”
“Then stop offering.”
“Habit.”
She smiled.
Nursing school began Monday.
Marcus had written a reference emphasizing reliability, emergency judgment and caregiving.
He offered no money beyond severance and earned benefits.
Elena had asked.
He respected it.
She wanted the next stage to belong to her.
Leo wandered into the room.
“Elena?”
“Yes, bug?”
“Go?”
Her eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“No.”
She crouched.
“I’ll see you Sunday.”
“No.”
“I know.”
Leo wrapped himself around her neck.
Marcus looked away.
Elena whispered:
“You have Dad.”
Leo looked at Marcus.
Then back at her.
“And me too.”
That mattered.
Not replacement.
Addition.
Elena visited Sundays.
Then every other Sunday as school intensified.
She became a licensed practical nurse.
Then continued.
Years.
Eventually registered nurse.
Marcus attended graduation.
Sat in the back.
No donation to the school.
No special seat.
Leo, six, screamed:
“ELENA!”
Everyone turned.
She laughed.
Marcus cried.
Elena teased:
“You are unbelievably emotional.”
“Publicly humiliating.”
“Good.”
Their relationship changed too.
Not romantic.
The story did not require that.
Marcus eventually dated again.
Elena eventually married a pediatric physical therapist named Daniel Ruiz.
Leo served as ring bearer.
Dropped the rings.
Everyone laughed.
Marcus attended.
Not as employer.
Family friend.
Something stranger and better.
Chosen connection.
Victoria’s absence remained complicated.
Leo knew about her gradually.
Age appropriate.
No lies.
At seven:
“Mom made unsafe choices.”
At ten:
“She had problems with money and anger.”
At fourteen:
Fuller truth.
At eighteen:
Court records if he wanted.
Marcus never told him:
Your mother never loved you.
Because Marcus did not know that.
Victoria had failed him.
Used his trust.
Endangered him.
May you like
But human beings could love badly.
Claiming certainty about her inner life would only create another lie.
