Chapter 1 - THE MAID WHO WOULDN’T MOVEThe polished oak floor of Vance Estate usually made every sound seem elegant.

That afternoon, it made Victoria’s heel strike sound like a gunshot.
Elena Reyes stepped backward so quickly that her shoulder hit the white crown molding.
Baby Leo was strapped against her chest in a soft carrier.
Eight months old.
Half asleep moments earlier.
Now crying.
Victoria stood in front of them wearing a gray tailored suit and pearl earrings.
Beautiful.
Controlled.
Except for her eyes.
“Give him to me.”
Elena shook her head.
“Not while you’re this upset.”
Victoria stared.
“You seem to have forgotten your position.”
“No, ma’am.”
“You are staff.”
“Yes.”
“He is my son.”
“Yes.”
“Then hand him over.”
Leo cried harder.
His fingers closed around Elena’s blouse.
She felt the grip.
Tiny.
Automatic.
Trusting.
That decided it.
“No.”
Victoria’s mouth opened slightly.
No servant in the mansion spoke to her that way.
Not twice.
“What did you say?”
Elena swallowed.
“He’s scared.”
“I don’t care if he’s scared.”
Silence.
Victoria realized what she had said.
Too late.
Elena lowered her voice.
“Please.”
“Give him to me.”
“No.”
Victoria kicked.
Not at Leo directly.
At Elena’s thigh.
Elena twisted.
Her body absorbed most of it.
The carrier stayed secure.
Leo screamed.
“Stop!”
“You think because he reaches for you that means anything?”
Elena froze.
Victoria had noticed.
Of course she had.
For weeks Leo had been calmer around Elena than either parent.
Marcus traveled.
Victoria remained busy with meetings, dinners and her father’s collapsing real-estate business.
Elena fed Leo.
Bathed him.
Put him to sleep.
Learned that he hated peas.
Loved piano music.
Would only stop crying after midnight if someone walked clockwise around the nursery.
She knew him.
That had never been the plan.
Elena was employed as a household maid.
Then the temporary nanny quit.
Then another.
Then Victoria said:
“Let Elena handle the baby until we replace her.”
Nobody replaced her.
Three months passed.
Now Victoria looked at the attachment she had created through absence and treated Elena as though she had stolen something.
“He reaches for me because I’m with him,” Elena said.
Victoria stepped closer.
“You like that, don’t you?”
“No.”
“You like being needed.”
“I like him being safe.”
Victoria’s face twisted.
“Do you think I’m unsafe?”
Elena did not answer.
Wrong choice.
Victoria grabbed the carrier strap.
Elena slapped her hand away.
Victoria gasped.
“How dare you?”
“Don’t touch him like that.”
“He is my child!”
“Then act like he matters more than winning an argument!”
The words came before Elena could stop them.
Victoria went silent.
Then raised her hand.
Heavy footsteps sounded from the end of the corridor.
Marcus Vance appeared beside the library.
Dark green suit.
White shirt.
No tie.
His face unreadable.
Victoria immediately dropped her arm.
“Marcus.”
Elena felt sick.
She had just shouted at his wife.
Struck her hand.
Refused to surrender his child.
Victoria transformed instantly.
“Thank God.”
She touched her elbow.
“She’s out of control.”
Elena stared.
“What?”
“She refused to give me Leo.”
Marcus said nothing.
Victoria continued.
“She shoved me.”
“That is not true.”
“Mr. Vance, she kicked—”
Marcus raised one hand.
Elena stopped.
He walked toward them.
Victoria softened her voice.
“You know how possessive Elena has become.”
Marcus stopped beside her.
Then slapped Victoria across the face.
The sound echoed down the hallway.
Leo screamed again.
Victoria stumbled.
Her hand flew to her cheek.
“Marcus!”
Elena stared too.
Marcus looked disgusted with himself almost immediately.
But his voice remained controlled.
“Enough.”
“You hit me.”
“I saw you attack her.”
Victoria’s face drained.
“What?”
“I came down this hallway two minutes ago.”
He pointed toward the library.
“I stood there.”
Victoria looked toward the door.
Then back.
“No.”
“Yes.”
“You misunderstood.”
“I watched you kick at a woman carrying my son.”
“She was withholding him from his mother.”
“I watched Leo hide against her when you approached.”
Victoria’s eyes flashed.
“He is a baby.”
“Exactly.”
Marcus looked at Elena.
“Are you hurt?”
“My shoulder.”
“Leo?”
“Scared.”
“Take him upstairs.”
Victoria immediately moved.
“Don’t you dare.”
Marcus stepped between them.
“Elena.”
“Yes?”
“Take Leo upstairs.”
Victoria stared at him.
“Marcus.”
“Lock the nursery.”
“You cannot lock me away from my own child.”
“I can keep him away from someone who just endangered him until I know what is happening.”
“You know what is happening.”
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“I know why you suddenly became interested in Leo today.”
Victoria froze.
Elena noticed.
Marcus continued.
“The trust amendment.”
Victoria’s lips parted.
“What?”
“My attorneys finalized the new protective clauses this morning.”
“That has nothing to do with this.”
“It has everything to do with this.”
Elena held Leo closer.
She should leave.
This was family business.
Money.
Lawyers.
Things employees survived by pretending not to hear.
Marcus looked at her.
“Please.”
Different from an order.
Elena nodded.
She headed toward the staircase.
Victoria shouted after her:
“Don’t get comfortable!”
Elena stopped.
Marcus’s face changed.
Victoria continued:
“You think because he trusts you now that you belong in this family?”
Elena turned slowly.
“I don’t want your family.”
That answer surprised everyone.
Elena looked at Leo.
“I want him safe.”
Then she left.
Upstairs, she locked the nursery.
Downstairs, Marcus and Victoria remained standing beneath the massive portrait of Marcus’s grandfather.
And for the first time in years, Marcus stopped seeing his wife as someone angry about money.
May you like
He saw a woman who had looked at their child—
and calculated value.
