Chapter 3 - THE DIAMOND THAT NEVER DISAPPEAREDPolice found the ring at 2:13 the next morning.

It wasn't in Anna's handbag.
It wasn't with Rachel.
It wasn't in Ethan's possession.
It was inside Vanessa's bridal bouquet.
A small plastic pouch had been taped beneath the floral wrapping.
The bride had carried it for nearly an hour while claiming someone had stolen it.
When detectives confronted her, Vanessa asked for an attorney.
Rachel spoke first.
By noon, the story began unraveling.
The original plan had been simple.
Vanessa would remove the ring.
Rachel would place the empty jewelry box near Anna's belongings.
Someone would “discover” it.
Vanessa would then say she had seen Anna near the bridal suite.
Police would be called.
Even if the ring itself wasn't found on Anna, suspicion would exist.
But Evelyn accelerated everything.
She ordered the physical search before Vanessa expected it.
Then relatives tore through Anna's clothing and handbag.
Rachel panicked.
She still had the box.
That was why the security footage showed Vanessa handing it to her.
But the footage created another problem.
It proved the disappearance had been staged.
Anna listened to Maya explain the preliminary statements.
“What was Ethan's role?”
“Rachel says she doesn't know.”
“She knows.”
“Probably.”
“And Vanessa?”
“Not talking.”
Anna looked at the empty chair across from her.
She had returned home.
Not the house she shared with Ethan.
Her mother's old townhouse.
Ethan had been instructed not to contact her except through attorneys.
He wasn't under arrest for the ring theft because technically the ring belonged to Vanessa and she had hidden it herself.
But fraud was another matter.
So was conspiracy.
So was the Brookfield deal.
The USB became critical.
With Anna's permission and police supervision, a forensic copy was made.
Maya opened the first folder.
PROJECT BRIDE.
Anna stared.
“What kind of idiot names a conspiracy Project Bride?”
“The kind who thinks nobody will ever see it.”
Inside were emails.
Spreadsheets.
Draft contracts.
Copies of Anna's signature.
Then audio files.
Ethan had recorded meetings.
Probably as insurance against Vanessa's family.
The first recording was Ethan and Vanessa.
Vanessa's voice:
“If she loses voting authority, you control the proxy.”
Ethan:
“Temporarily.”
Vanessa:
“Temporary is enough.”
Anna stopped playback.
Her hands trembled.
She had heard enough to recognize her husband's voice instantly.
Maya asked:
“Continue?”
“Yes.”
Ethan spoke again.
“Anna can't know Brookfield is connected to the Mercer acquisition.”
Vanessa laughed.
“She doesn't even read half of what you put in front of her.”
Anna closed her eyes.
That hurt more than she expected.
Because it was true.
She trusted him.
Pregnancy had been difficult during the first trimester.
Nausea.
Exhaustion.
Hospital visits.
Ethan volunteered to handle paperwork.
“Rest. I'll take care of you.”
Now she understood what “take care” meant.
Maya continued.
Another recording involved Rachel.
Then a male voice Anna didn't recognize.
The financial structure became clearer.
Mercer Capital wanted Brookfield before a zoning decision increased its value.
Anna's father had purchased the land decades earlier.
Anna controlled the deciding vote.
She had repeatedly rejected offers.
Ethan couldn't legally force a sale.
So he created paperwork disguised as routine internal restructuring.
Even that might eventually be challenged.
They needed Anna temporarily removed from corporate decision-making before closing.
A theft accusation provided the mechanism.
But Vanessa had another motive.
Maya discovered it in text messages.
Vanessa and Ethan had been having an affair.
Anna stared at the screen.
Three years.
Not weeks.
Not a drunken mistake.
Three years.
Hotel reservations.
Deleted photographs.
Messages.
Promises.
After the baby comes, she'll be too distracted to fight.
Anna stood so quickly Maya reached for her.
“I'm okay.”
She wasn't.
She walked into the bathroom.
Closed the door.
Then vomited.
When she returned, Maya had closed the laptop.
Anna sat down.
“Open it.”
“You don't need to read every message.”
“I need enough.”
“Enough for what?”
Anna looked at her.
“To stop thinking this marriage can be explained.”
Maya opened it again.
There was no explanation.
Ethan loved Vanessa.
Or claimed to.
Vanessa told Ethan she refused to remain “the hidden woman.”
Ethan promised Anna would be out of the company and eventually out of his life.
One message was dated two days after Anna told him she was pregnant.
Vanessa:
Now we're stuck with her forever.
Ethan:
Not necessarily.
Anna stared at those two words.
Not necessarily.
Her hand moved automatically to her belly.
Maya noticed.
“There is nothing here suggesting physical harm.”
Anna nodded.
She knew.
But betrayal changes how ordinary words feel.
The baby kicked.
Anna placed her palm over the movement.
Then she saw another file.
A legal draft.
DIVORCE STRATEGY.
She opened it.
Ethan had already consulted an attorney.
He planned to portray Anna as emotionally unstable.
Financially irresponsible.
Possibly dishonest.
The staged theft would strengthen that narrative.
Anna laughed.
Maya looked worried.
“What?”
“He planned my divorce before I knew my marriage was over.”
Her laughter became tears.
She wiped them away.
Then she found one final document.
A proposed settlement.
Ethan expected to claim a portion of the increased Brookfield value after the Mercer transaction.
Estimated personal gain:
$4.8 million.
Anna stared.
Three years of betrayal had a price tag.
Then Maya's phone rang.
She answered.
Listened.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
Anna waited.
Maya ended the call.
“Ethan wants to cooperate.”
“With police?”
“With everyone.”
“Why?”
“He says Vanessa planned more than the ring.”
Anna felt nothing.
“What more?”
Maya hesitated.
“He says the USB contains a second encrypted partition.”
“What's inside?”
“He won't give the password unless he gets immunity.”
Anna stared at the black drive.
Ethan had betrayed Vanessa too.
The USB wasn't merely evidence.
May you like
It was leverage.
And whatever was hidden inside frightened the bride enough to turn pale in front of three hundred witnesses.
