Chapter 1 - THE MISSING DIAMONDAnna Reed knew something was wrong when the music stopped.

Until that moment, the Mercer wedding had been exactly what everyone expected from a family wealthy enough to rent the entire nineteenth floor of the Halston Grand.
Champagne towers.
White roses.
A twelve-piece orchestra.
Crystal chandeliers reflecting from polished marble.
Nearly three hundred guests dressed as if photographers might appear at any second.
Anna had almost declined the invitation.
At seven months pregnant, standing in heels for hours wasn't her idea of fun.
Ethan insisted.
“Vanessa's practically family.”
That sentence bothered Anna now.
She hadn't understood exactly how true it was.
Anna stood near the dessert table when she heard the bride scream.
“My ring!”
Every conversation stopped.
Vanessa Mercer came rushing from the bridal suite, clutching her left hand.
Her enormous engagement ring was missing.
Evelyn Mercer, the groom's sixty-two-year-old mother, immediately took control.
Nobody left.
Security closed the ballroom exits.
Tables were searched.
Staff members were questioned.
Then Vanessa said something Anna would remember for years.
“I saw Anna near my room.”
Anna turned.
“What?”
Vanessa's blonde hair framed a face carefully arranged into distress.
“You were outside the bridal suite.”
“I was looking for the restroom.”
Bridesmaid Rachel Cole stepped forward.
“You went inside.”
Anna stared at her.
“No, I didn't.”
Rachel lowered her eyes.
That performance was enough.
Whispers spread.
Ethan approached.
Anna expected him to defend her.
Instead he asked quietly:
“Anna, did you accidentally pick something up?”
She stared at him.
“Excuse me?”
“Maybe you thought it was yours.”
“A diamond ring?”
“I'm trying to help.”
“No. You're asking whether I stole it.”
Evelyn approached.
Silver gown.
Gray hair.
Perfect posture.
No hesitation.
“Search her. Find the ring.”
Anna stepped backward.
“You cannot be serious.”
Two female relatives moved toward her.
One touched her handbag.
Anna pulled it away.
“Don't touch me.”
Then everything became ugly very quickly.
Someone grabbed her sleeve.
Another woman reached toward the pocket sewn into her maternity gown.
The fabric tore.
Anna cried out.
“Stop!”
Ethan stood nearby.
He did nothing.
Anna looked at him.
That was the moment.
Not the accusation.
Not the ring.
Not even the humiliation.
Her husband watched.
Seven months pregnant.
Surrounded.
Frightened.
And he watched.
Someone pushed past her.
Anna lost balance.
She fell onto one knee, then sideways, catching herself with her palm while her other arm immediately wrapped around her belly.
Pain shot through her hip.
“Ethan!”
He finally moved.
But not toward her.
Toward Evelyn.
“Everyone calm down.”
Anna couldn't believe what she was seeing.
A woman snatched her handbag.
Its contents spilled across a nearby table.
Wallet.
Phone charger.
Keys.
Makeup.
Medication.
A folded ultrasound photograph.
No ring.
Anna slowly stood.
Her face burned.
“I didn't take anything.”
Ethan looked at her.
Something in his expression was wrong.
Not concern.
Fear.
But Anna suddenly realized he wasn't afraid for her.
He was afraid of something else.
Then the ballroom doors locked electronically.
A loud click echoed through the room.
Everyone turned.
The head of hotel security entered.
Daniel Cross was forty, broad-shouldered, wearing a black security suit and holding a tablet.
Behind him, the enormous presentation screen descended.
Evelyn frowned.
“What is this?”
Daniel didn't answer immediately.
The hotel had received a request to preserve and review all security footage after the allegation.
The screen illuminated.
Timestamp:
4:17 PM.
Bridal corridor.
Vanessa appeared.
Rachel appeared beside her.
Anna watched Vanessa remove a small velvet box from inside the bridal suite.
She handed it to Rachel.
Rachel tucked it inside her pink satin dress.
The footage froze.
A gasp traveled through the ballroom.
Vanessa's face changed.
“Turn it off. Immediately!”
Daniel continued operating the tablet.
The next clip appeared.
4:03 PM.
Inside the outer reception area of the bridal suite.
Ethan entered.
Anna stopped breathing.
Her husband looked around.
Vanessa joined him seconds later.
On a side table sat the same dark jewelry box.
Ethan picked it up.
Vanessa said something the silent camera couldn't capture.
Then Ethan put it down.
Anna slowly turned.
“Why were you in that room?”
Ethan didn't answer.
Security officers moved toward him.
He suddenly lunged for Daniel's tablet.
Guests screamed.
Ethan grabbed it.
Then ran.
He made it almost twenty feet.
Two officers stopped him near the elevator.
His bow tie had twisted.
His jacket opened.
His face no longer looked like the confident financial consultant Anna had married six years earlier.
He looked cornered.
Daniel took back the tablet.
“Sir, step away.”
Ethan reached inside his jacket.
Anna tensed.
His hand emerged holding something tiny.
A USB drive.
Black casing.
Silver connector.
Ethan looked directly at Anna.
His voice was strangely calm.
“If they open this, everything changes.”
Anna stared at it.
Then she noticed Vanessa.
The bride wasn't looking at Ethan.
She was staring at the USB.
All color had disappeared from her face.
Rachel began backing toward another exit.
Daniel noticed.
So did Anna.
And suddenly Anna understood one terrifying fact.

The missing diamond wasn't the secret.
It was only the distraction.
