Chapter 6 - THE GARBAGE BAGThe giant garbage bag remained in evidence for weeks.

Eventually, authorities returned the non-essential contents.
Ethan looked inside.
Plastic bottles.
Garden waste.
Broken kitchen packaging.
Old magazines.
Heavy enough that an adult would complain.
Lily had dragged it across thirty yards.
The image became symbolic for everyone.
Ethan hated that.
He didn't want Lily reduced to “the girl with the garbage bag.”
So he asked her therapist whether he should remove all chores.
No.
Children benefited from age-appropriate responsibility.
The distinction mattered.
One evening Ethan asked:
“Want to help set the table?”
Lily stared suspiciously.
“Do I have to?”
“No.”
“Will you be mad?”
“No.”
She thought.
“Okay.”
She placed forks incorrectly.
Ethan didn't correct them.
Then Lily laughed.
“Daddy, they're backwards.”
He laughed too.
