Chapter 5 - VANESSA'S STORYVanessa denied being abusive.
She called everything chores.
Character-building.
Household contribution.
She said bruises happened because Lily was clumsy.
Then video appeared.
Her explanations changed.
She admitted grabbing Lily.
But only during tantrums.
She admitted forcing work.
But said Ethan wanted his daughter grounded.
She produced messages.
Some made Ethan look bad.
Vanessa:
Lily needs more discipline.
Ethan:
Do whatever you think is reasonable.
There it was.
His words.
Vanessa used them.
Ethan didn't deny them.
His attorney wanted context emphasized.
Ethan said:
“Context matters. But I wrote it.”
He accepted that.
Lily's therapist later asked whether she believed Ethan had wanted Vanessa to hurt her.
Lily said:
“I thought he did.”
That answer crushed him.
He couldn't argue with a child's experience.
He asked:
“What do I do?”
The therapist said:
“Become consistently different from the father she was taught to expect.”
Not one grand gesture.
