Chapter 2 - The Fall of the First Domino

The dining room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
The heavy, polished oak doors of the grand dining hall swung open with a resounding thud. Standing in the entryway was Director Vance, the steely, uncompromising head of Global Security and Operations for Vanguard Enterprises. Behind him stood four armed corporate security personnel in dark tactical suits, their expressions carved from stone.
Brendan stood up halfway from his chair, his face contorting in a mixture of confusion and annoyance.
"What the hell is this?" Brendan snapped, pointing an accusing finger at Vance. "Who gave you permission to walk into my mother’s home? Get these thugs out of here before I call real police!"
Director Vance didn't even glance at Brendan. His eyes, sharp as winter ice, scanned the room, locked onto my dripping figure, and immediately widened with alarm. Without uttering a word to my ex-husband, Vance marched past the dining table, pulled a pristine white silk handkerchief from his breast pocket, and respectfully laid it beside my plate—though he didn't dare touch me without permission.
"Madam President," Vance said, his voice dropping into a tone of absolute, unwavering reverence. "We received the emergency signal from Arthur. Are you physically unharmed? Shall I secure the premises and detain these individuals for assault?"
The name Madam President echoed off the crystal chandeliers and expensive wallpaper.
Diane choked on her sip of wine, coughing violently as her face turned a deep, mottled purple. Jessica’s mouth dropped open, her eyes darting between Vance and me as if trying to solve an impossible mathematical equation.
Brendan let out a nervous, breathless bark of laughter.
"Are you completely out of your mind?" Brendan shouted at Vance, his voice cracking slightly. "Madam President? Have you lost your collective minds? She’s Cassidy! She’s a broke nobody who lives in a rented apartment and relies on my alimony! She doesn't even have a college degree, let alone—"
"Mr. Brendan Morrison," Vance interrupted, finally turning his gaze toward my ex-husband. The look in Vance's eyes made Brendan involuntarily step back. "You are addressing Cassidy Sinclair, sole owner, majority shareholder, and Chief Executive Officer of Vanguard Enterprises. And as of forty seconds ago, by executive command under Protocol 7, every single asset, account, subsidiary, and employment contract tied to the Morrison family has been frozen, audited, and terminated."
Brendan shook his head furiously, stepping forward. "That is impossible! My father is the Senior Vice President of Corporate Procurement at Vanguard! I am the Director of Regional Acquisitions! My family is Vanguard!"
Vance reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a heavy black leather folder embossed with platinum leafing—the universal insignia of Vanguard’s inner board. He tossed it onto the table, landing with a heavy thud right in front of Brendan's wineglass.
"Your father’s employment was terminated at 7:14 PM," Vance stated coldly. "Your own corporate access badge was deactivated at 7:15 PM. Your corporate credit cards, your company cars, your housing allowances, and your stock options have been legally revoked due to gross misconduct and violation of the corporate ethics clause regarding harassment of executive leadership."
Jessica grabbed Brendan’s arm, her fingers digging in so hard her knuckles turned white. "Brendan… what is he talking about? Make them stop! Tell them to leave!"
Brendan’s phone buzzed violently in his pocket. Then, a second later, his mother’s phone began to ring. Then the landline in the hallway started chiming insistently.
Brendan slowly reached into his pocket, pulled out his sleek smartphone, and stared at the screen. His face drained of every single drop of color until he looked like a corpse under fluorescent lights.
"My… my banking app," Brendan whispered, his voice trembling as the reality began to violently shatter his fragile world. "It’s… it’s locked. It says my accounts have been seized pending a federal compliance audit by Vanguard Legal."
Diane staggered up from her seat, clutching her chest. "Call the board! Call CEO Sinclair! Tell them there’s been a mistake! Tell them Diane Morrison demands an explanation!"

I finally lifted my head. The cold water had stopped dripping, but my gaze was sharper than any blade. I looked straight into Diane’s terrified, wrinkled face.
"Diane," I said softly, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. "You’re looking right at her."
