Chapter 1 - The Breaking Point

I never revealed to my ex-husband or his wealthy relatives that I secretly owned the multi-billion-dollar corporation where every one of them worked. In their eyes, I was nothing more than the “poor, pregnant burden” they tolerated because they felt obligated to.

Then, during a family dinner, my former mother-in-law, Diane, deliberately dumped a bucket of freezing, filthy water over my head and smiled.

“Look at the bright side… at least you finally had a bath.”

Brendan laughed along with her.

Jessica, his new girlfriend, covered her mouth as a giggle escaped.

I remained seated, drenched and trembling, while icy water streamed from my hair, soaked through my dress, and ran down my hands.

They expected tears.

They expected an apology.

They expected me to run from the room in humiliation.

But something inside me became completely still.

Cold.

Focused.

Calm.

I reached into my handbag, took out my phone, and typed three simple words.

“Activate Protocol 7.”

Ten minutes later, the same people who had just been laughing at me would be begging me to make it stop.

“Oops,” Diane said with a crooked smile, making absolutely no attempt to pretend it had been an accident.

The shock of the nearly frozen water made my baby kick sharply inside me.

“Try looking at the positive side,” she continued, lifting her wineglass. “At least now you finally look somewhat presentable.”

Brendan burst into laughter.

Jessica glanced down at my soaked shoes and spoke in a light, mocking voice.

“Someone should bring her an old towel. We wouldn't want that smell getting into the expensive linens.”

Dirty water dripped steadily onto the Persian rug beneath my chair.

The very same rug I had personally approved three years earlier as part of the renovation budget for the company’s corporate headquarters.

I drew in a slow breath.

Not for them.

For my daughter.

Jessica laughed again.

“Who exactly are you calling?” she asked. “A charity organization? It’s Sunday, sweetheart.”

“Brendan,” Diane sighed as she poured herself more wine, “just give her twenty dollars for a taxi and make her disappear.”

I said nothing.

Instead, I opened the contact saved in my phone as:

“Arthur – EVP Legal.”

Then I called.

He answered before the second ring.

“Cassidy?” he said immediately. “Are you alright?”

I raised my eyes and looked directly at Brendan.

“No,” I replied. “Execute Protocol 7. Immediately.”

A short silence followed on the other end of the line.

Arthur understood exactly what that command meant.

“Cassidy…” he said carefully. “If I activate it, the Morrisons could lose everything.”

I watched Brendan’s expression begin to change.

“They already lost it,” I said calmly, placing the phone on the glass table. “Make it effective now.”

Brendan frowned.

“Protocol 7?” he demanded. “What the hell is that supposed to mean? Is this another one of your ridiculous dramas?”

I held his gaze without blinking.

Water was still dripping from my hair onto the immaculate floor.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then we heard something outside.

The sharp sound of brakes.

Several car doors opening.

Footsteps approaching the house.

Heavy.

Fast.

Organized.

Then came the sound of the front door opening.

Brendan turned toward the hallway, still wearing the remains of his arrogant smile.

But when the head of corporate security stepped inside and addressed me by my real title, Brendan’s laughter vanished instantly.

And for the first time that evening, nobody at the table was smiling anymore…
