Chapter 12 - The Unraveling

Richard Vance stared at me, his eyes narrowing in disgust.
"Who are you?" Vance demanded. "Move out of my way! That child is my legal property!"
"Your daughter isn't property, Mr. Vance," I replied, taking a step toward him. "And she wasn't stolen by your housekeeper. She was rescued from your wife."
Vance's face turned red. "This is outrageous! My wife is grieving at home!"
Detective Miller stepped out from the doctor's office, holding his department tablet facing outward.
He pressed play on the video.
The audio filled the quiet hospital corridor—the clear, high-definition sound of Victoria Vance discussing the poisoning scheme with her enforcer, Marcus, in the nursery.
Richard Vance's breath caught in his throat.
His face turned from angry red to a sickly, ghost-white pale.
His two high-priced attorneys looked at the screen, then at each other, immediately taking two steps away from their client.
"Mr. Vance," Detective Miller declared, pulling his steel handcuffs from his belt. "Your wife, Victoria Vance, was taken into federal custody twenty minutes ago at her residence."

"What... what about Clara?" Vance stammered, his posture collapsing into shock.
"Your enforcer, Marcus, was intercepted by state troopers at the Long Island marina ten minutes ago," Miller reported coldly. "Clara has been rescued unharmed. She is currently in a police transport on her way to this hospital."
