Chapter 10 - The Video in the Lining

"What did your mom see, Toby?" I asked, leaning in close.

Toby reached under his hospital pillow.

His small fingers pulled out a thin, silver micro-SD memory card—the size of a fingernail—that he had kept hidden inside the lining of his green shirt collar.

"Mom slipped this into my pocket when the man broke into our kitchen," Toby revealed, his voice shaking. "She told me to keep it hidden until I found someone I could trust."

I took the tiny silver card into my palm.

"What's on this, Toby?"

"Mom was cleaning Mr. Vance's private office three days ago," Toby explained. "She found a nanny-cam tape from the nursery. Mrs. Vance... she wasn't sick. She was feeding the baby something from a bottle that made Leo drop her weight."

I stared at the tiny chip in my hand, horror rising in my chest.

"She was poisoning her own child?"

"Mr. Vance wanted a divorce," Toby whispered. "Mrs. Vance wanted the baby to stay sick so Mr. Vance couldn't take custody during the court hearing."

When Clara found the tape, she tried to take the baby away to save her life.

Victoria Vance realized her scheme was about to be exposed.

She hired an enforcer to snatch Clara, take the baby, lock the children in the van, and report the maid for kidnapping before anyone could look at the nursery tapes.
