Michael answered once.
“Is Sophie safe?”
“Yes.”
“Can I speak to her?”
“No.”
Helen cried.
Michael didn't enjoy denying her.
That made it harder.
“You watched them humiliate her.”
“I froze.”
“You've been freezing for years.”
Silence.
Helen admitted Robert controlled more than the company.
He controlled the family narrative.
Andrew made mistakes because he was “young.”
Michael was expected to be responsible because he was “strong.”
Rachel was difficult because she asked questions.
Sophie became spoiled because she inherited something Robert couldn't touch.
Every label served the same purpose.
Protect Robert.
Helen had survived by accommodating him.
Then called accommodation love.
Michael said:
“You're allowed to be afraid of Dad.”
Helen cried.
“But you're not allowed to use Sophie as the price of keeping him calm.”
That afternoon Helen made a choice.
She left Robert.
Not dramatically.
One suitcase.
Medication.
Documents.
Christmas coat.
She went to her sister's house.
Then she called David Mercer.
“I'll testify.”

And started protecting the truth.
