Chapter 10 - The Phone Five Years LaterFive years after Camila’s funeral, Bia was eleven.

Ricardo found the old phone inside a sealed property box returned after all legal proceedings ended.
It no longer powered on.
He asked Bia what she wanted done with it.
She stared at the device.
“That was Mom’s?”
“Yes.”
“The one from Rosie?”
“Yes.”
Bia looked toward the doll sitting on a bookshelf.
She had not carried it in years.
“Can we keep the recordings somewhere else?”
“They’re archived.”
“Then throw the phone away.”
Ricardo hesitated.
For him, the cracked phone represented the day everything changed.
For Bia, it was broken electronics.
He smiled.
“Okay.”
Helena remained part of Bia’s life in limited, carefully rebuilt ways.
Lucas had become a steadier father.
Ricardo remained close without pretending he could replace Camila.
The family still disagreed about whether earlier treatment might have saved her.
No report could answer that completely.
But one truth survived every review.
Camila had asked to be heard before she died.
Too many adults answered by explaining her instead.
Bia picked up Rosie and inspected the old hidden pocket.
“It’s tiny.”
“It held a whole phone.”
“I was six. Everything looked bigger.”
Ricardo laughed softly.
She placed the doll back on the shelf.
Five years earlier, Bia’s revelation shifted power across a funeral room.

The better ending was quieter.
She no longer needed a secret in her hands before adults believed her words mattered.
