Chapter 3 - EVERYONE KNEW EXCEPT VICTORIAVictoria returned to her hotel suite and called Jonathan Pierce immediately.

He answered warmly.
“Victoria.”
“I met Emma Carter.”
Silence.
That pause told her everything.
“You know who she is.”
“I can explain.”
“Come to Boston.”
“I’m in New York.”
“Then take a plane.”
“Victoria, you’re emotional.”
Something inside her hardened.
Charles had used that word whenever Emily challenged him.
Emotional.
As though feelings disproved facts.
“If you speak to me like my father again, this conversation ends with my lawyer instead of you.”
Jonathan changed tone.
“I’ll come tomorrow.”
Victoria ended the call.
Then called her mother.
Eleanor Rosewood was seventy-four.
Victoria asked only one question.
“Did you know Emily had a daughter?”
Her mother began crying.
Victoria shut her eyes.
“How long?”
“Since Emma was born.”
Victoria nearly dropped the phone.
“Everyone knew except me.”
“No—”
“You knew where she was?”
“For some years.”
“And you did nothing.”
“I sent money.”
“Secretly?”
“Yes.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You think money is the same as showing up?”
“No.”
“I was afraid of your father,” Eleanor whispered.
“So was I.”
Victoria’s voice broke.
“But Emily was afraid too.”
She ended the call.
For years, Victoria had believed the Rosewood family tragedy was about one rebellious daughter walking away.
Now she saw the real architecture.
A powerful father punished one child.
A frightened mother helped quietly but refused to challenge him.
A compliant older sister remained safely inside the family structure.
A lawyer translated control into paperwork.
And Emily lived with the consequences.
Then Victoria remembered the inheritance.
Charles had died after years of managing the family estate.
If Emily’s renunciation had been invalid, some of those rights might have passed to Emma.
Victoria’s phone rang.
Emma.
“I forgot something.”
“What?”
“Mom left a letter for you.”
Victoria’s chest tightened.
“When can I read it?”
Emma paused.
“She told me not to give it to you unless you answered one question.”
“What question?”
“Do you want the truth if it makes you look worse than your father?”
Victoria stared out the hotel window.
For the first time since seeing Lily, she understood something uncomfortable.

Proving she did not forge the signature might clear her legally.
It would not necessarily make her innocent.
