Chapter 5 - VANESSA’S REVENGEVanessa did not disappear quietly.

She had too much to lose.

Brand partnerships.

Campaigns.

A planned perfume line.

Millions in projected royalties.

So she changed the story.

Claire was jealous.

Claire had always resented Vanessa's success.

Claire used marriage to gain influence over Donovan House.

The boutique confrontation was “mutual.”

Within twenty-four hours social media split.

Some believed Claire.

Some called the story corporate infighting.

Then Vanessa released a photograph.

Claire at dinner with Ethan and Adrian six months earlier.

Caption:

She knew everything.

Claire stared.

The dinner existed.

She had attended.

Adrian presented early collection concepts.

Claire disliked them.

Vanessa wasn't present.

But a photograph without context could become anything.

Reporters asked:

“If Claire suspected design theft, why did she attend launch planning?”

Good question.

Claire answered.

“Because suspicion isn't proof.”

Less exciting.

More honest.

Vanessa hated honest answers because they reduced drama she could manipulate.

So she escalated.

An anonymous package arrived at a newspaper.

Copies of Ruth's notebooks.

Along with a claim:

Claire forged them after marrying into Donovan wealth.

That accusation changed everything.

Now Ruth's evidence itself had to survive scrutiny.

Ink dating.

Paper analysis.

Photographic provenance.

Family storage records.

Claire welcomed it.

Vanessa didn't expect that.

Independent experts confirmed the notebooks predated Claire's marriage by decades.

Then private collectors produced early Donovan garments containing Ruth's notch system.

Maria Alvarez was found in Arizona.

Eighty-three.

Sharp memory.

Sharper humor.

When shown a famous Donovan coat, she laughed.

“That sleeve was terrible.”

Historians stared.

Fashion textbooks praised it.

Maria explained Julian's original sleeve collapsed during fitting.

She and Ruth rebuilt it over three nights.

“Did Julian design the final sleeve?”

Maria shrugged.

“He drew the first one.”

That sentence traveled worldwide.

Not malicious.

Devastating.

Vanessa's attempt to discredit Claire had accidentally summoned living witnesses.

Then Maria produced something nobody knew existed.

A box.

Forty-seven carbon-copy work orders.

Names.

Dates.

Corrections.

Payments.

Physical evidence connecting seamstresses to major designs.

Claire cried when she saw Ruth's signature.

Maria looked at her.

“Don't cry. Ruth would hate that.”

Claire laughed.

“What would she do?”

“Complain somebody stored these near humidity.”

Perfect.

The scandal changed again.

No longer Claire versus Vanessa.

No longer old notebook versus corporation.

Workers were speaking.

Historians were listening.

Then an overseas labor organization contacted Claire's legal team.

Workers at Mirae Unit 6 had saved photographs of production labels before Donovan contractors removed them.

One image showed the cream dress.

Same style code Claire wore during the assault.

Same garment marketed as “crafted through American atelier tradition.”

Vanessa's campaign had been built on stolen history and hidden labor simultaneously.

But Vanessa still had one weapon.

She knew something about Ethan.

A decision he had made two years earlier.

One Claire didn't know.

Vanessa called Claire personally.

“You think your husband is clean?”

Claire said nothing.

“He approved the supplier consolidation.”

“Through Adrian's report.”

Vanessa laughed.

“No.”

Pause.

“He approved the actual factory.”

Claire felt cold.

That contradicted Ethan.

Vanessa continued.

“Ask him why his initials are on the original Unit 6 contract.”

The call ended.

Claire found Ethan in his office.

She placed the contract copy on his desk.

“Tell me she's lying.”

He looked at it.

Then closed his eyes.

Claire's stomach dropped.

He knew.

May you like

Not everything.

But more than he'd admitted.
