His defense argued he offered coaching, not therapy.
That clients voluntarily implemented techniques.
Some parents had indeed volunteered.
That complicated moral narratives.
But recordings of threats and demands supported coercion and extortion allegations.
The case became larger than the Mercer family.
Ryan testified about what he knew.
Natalie testified too.
That surprised him.
Her attorney warned cooperation could expose her further.
Natalie said:
“It should.”
Ryan heard about the statement secondhand.
He felt something he hadn't expected.
Sadness.
Not love.
Not reconciliation.
Sadness for the person Natalie could have been if she had asked for help before trying to dominate everyone around her.
Vale's eventual legal consequences mattered.
But Ryan stopped following every hearing.
Claire didn't need her father living inside the criminal case.
She needed him at school concerts.
Tyler needed pancakes.
