Mara smiled.

“I got a job.”

Forensic accounting again.

A nonprofit investigating financial exploitation involving minors and guardianship structures.

The irony pleased everyone.

Lucy cried.

Mara promised visits.

Adrian offered more money.

Mara declined.

“I don't want staying to be proof of loyalty.”

He understood.

Old Cole Manor had confused employment, affection and obligation.

People stayed because leaving felt dangerous.

Mara wanted a life.

So she left.

Lucy learned another important lesson.

Someone can love you and still go.
