Chapter 5 - THE HIDDEN ACCOUNT

### HOOK

Margaret had hidden hundreds of thousands of dollars.

But Claire's attorney had finally found the account.

It wasn't under Margaret's name.

It wasn't under Ethan's.

It belonged to a company registered overseas.

Then Claire saw the company's director.

Vanessa.

Claire stared at the screen.

For one terrifying moment, she thought the blonde woman had betrayed her too.

Then Vanessa arrived and explained the truth.

She had been listed as director without knowing it.

Margaret had used Vanessa's identity to hide the money.

And there was something inside the account that could destroy the entire family.

A payment record.

A legal invoice.

And a transfer made to the private investigator who had been building a case against Claire.

The investigator hadn't been hired to protect Lily.

He had been hired to destroy Claire.

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

Vanessa whispered:

“Because I was trying to survive my mother too.”

What would Claire discover about the woman Margaret hired to destroy her?

### FULL CHAPTER

The account belonged to a company called Whitmore Family Holdings.

Its registered director was Vanessa Whitmore.

Vanessa looked horrified when Daniel showed her.

“I didn't sign this.”

Daniel nodded.

“We know.”

He explained that Margaret had forged several corporate documents.

Vanessa had been used as a nominee.

Her identity had protected Margaret.

Claire looked at her.

“Did you know about the money?”

“No.”

“Not even a little?”

“No.”

Vanessa's voice broke.

“I swear.”

Claire believed her.

Because Vanessa looked as frightened as Lily had looked at the birthday party.

Daniel traced the payments.

The first went to a private investigator.

The second went to a therapist.

The third went to a former nanny.

The fourth went to a family friend.

All of them had been paid to create evidence against Claire.

The therapist had been asked to document Claire's supposed emotional instability.

The nanny had been asked to claim Claire neglected Lily.

The family friend had been asked to report that Claire was “obsessed” with her daughter.

Claire felt sick.

“They manufactured witnesses.”

“Yes.”

Daniel opened another file.

There was an invoice.

The private investigator had been paid $42,000.

The description read:

Monitor Claire. Document conflict. Prepare custody profile.

Claire stared at it.

“How long?”

“Almost a year.”

She thought about every argument.

Every time Ethan had accused her of being paranoid.

Every time Margaret had asked invasive questions.

They had been collecting material.

Then Daniel showed her the most disturbing document.

A draft psychological report.

It had been written before Claire ever met the psychologist.

It contained conclusions.

Claire was unstable.

Claire was controlling.

Claire was hostile toward family.

Daniel looked at her.

“This is fraud.”

“Can we prove it?”

“Yes.”

The investigator cooperated after being confronted with the evidence.

He admitted Margaret had hired him.

He admitted Ethan participated.

He admitted the report was fabricated.

He also revealed something else.

Margaret had been preparing to remove Lily from Claire's home on the morning after the birthday party.

She had arranged for Ethan to take Lily to the Whitmore estate.

Claire felt cold.

“If I hadn't arrived when I did…”

“She would have taken her.”

Claire closed her eyes.

Lily could have disappeared from her life.

That realization made her hands shake.

She went home.

Lily was drawing.

Claire sat beside her.

“What are you drawing?”

“Our family.”

Claire looked at the page.

There was Lily.

Claire.

Ethan.

And a large pink sun.

“Where's Grandma?”

Lily took a red crayon and drew a line through the corner.

“Not here.”

Claire smiled.

“Okay.”

That evening, Ethan arrived for his supervised visit.

He looked exhausted.

He knelt beside Lily.

“Hi, sweetheart.”

Lily didn't run to him.

She stayed beside Claire.

Ethan looked hurt.

But he didn't force her.

“I brought you something.”

He handed her a small box.

Inside was a stuffed rabbit.

Lily took it.

“Thank you.”

Ethan looked at Claire.

“Can we talk?”

Claire nodded.

Outside, he whispered:

“I know what Mom did.”

“You knew before.”

“I know.”

“You helped her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Ethan looked down.

“I was afraid.”

Claire stared at him.

“Of what?”

“Losing her.”

Claire shook her head.

“You were afraid of losing your mother, so you risked losing your daughter.”

Ethan cried.

“I know.”

Claire didn't comfort him.

Not because she wanted him to suffer.

Because he needed to understand.

Then Ethan said:

“I have something.”

He handed her a flash drive.

“What is it?”

“Everything.”

Claire looked at him.

“Everything what?”

“The recordings Mom made.”

He swallowed.

“She recorded herself planning the custody case.”

Claire took the drive.

“Why are you giving me this?”

“Because I finally understand.”

He looked toward Lily.

“I don't deserve to be her father right now.”

Claire didn't answer.

Ethan walked away.

Daniel examined the recordings that night.

There were hours of audio.

Margaret discussing Claire.

Margaret discussing the trust.

Margaret discussing Lily.

Then one recording made Claire freeze.

Margaret said:

“If Claire fights back, we'll use the birthday party.”

Ethan asked:

“What if she doesn't?”

“She will.”

“She always protects Lily.”

Margaret laughed.

“Exactly.”

Claire listened in silence.

They had predicted her reaction.

But they hadn't predicted Vanessa.

They hadn't predicted Daniel.

May you like

And they certainly hadn't predicted the next witness.
