Chapter 6 - We Became A Real Family—And Margaret Finally Got What She Deserved**

Our relationship was gentle, slow, perfect.
We didn’t rush anything.
We told the girls first, sitting them down one evening after dinner.
Olivia smiled, like she’d already known.
Grace clapped her hands and yelled “Finally!”
Lily climbed into Richard’s lap and asked if that meant he was her daddy now.
Richard’s eyes filled with tears.
“Only if you want me to be,” he said.
Lily hugged his neck tight.
“I want you to be.”
From that day on, all three girls called him Dad.
And he was the best father any of them could have asked for.
We kept our relationship private at first, enjoying our little bubble of happiness.
But eventually, the news got out.
Most people were happy for us.
They loved the story of the billionaire who’d saved the widow and her daughters, who’d fallen in love and built a family.
But there were still some who believed Margaret’s lies, who said I was just using Richard for his money.
We ignored them.
We had each other, we had the girls, we had happiness.
That was all that mattered.
Margaret wasn’t done, though.
Her last attempt to hurt us had failed, but she had one more trick up her sleeve.
She leaked old, edited photos to the press, trying to make it look like I’d been having an affair with Richard while Michael was still alive.
She gave interviews claiming we’d planned everything together, that we’d killed Michael to get his money.
It was all lies, of course.
But it was enough to start rumors, enough to cause trouble for Richard’s businesses, enough to hurt the charity I’d worked so hard to build.
Richard didn’t let it stand.
His investigators worked day and night, and they found proof that Margaret had paid the driver who’d tried to run us over.
They found proof she’d forged the photos, paid people to lie about our relationship.
They even found evidence that she’d had a hand in Michael’s “accident” all those years ago, that she’d tampered with his car to kill him before he could change his will and leave everything directly to me.
The police arrested Margaret.
She was charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, fraud, and perjury.
This time, there was no way out.
The evidence was overwhelming.
Her trial was quick, and the verdict was guilty on all counts.
She was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
She would never hurt anyone again.
The day she was sentenced, we stood outside the courthouse together.
Richard held my hand, the girls stood in front of us, safe and smiling.
It was finally over.
All the pain, all the fear, all the years of suffering.
Margaret was gone from our lives forever.
We went home that night and had another celebration.
This one was bigger than the last.
Clara made an even bigger cake, all our friends and family came over, and we laughed and danced late into the night.
As I watched Richard spin Lily around the living room, as I watched Olivia and Grace laughing with their friends, I felt my heart so full it almost hurt.
We’d survived.
May you like
We’d won.
And we had everything we’d ever dreamed of.
