Chapter 7 - WHAT $110 WAS REALLY WORTHRestitution numbers crossed into millions.

Workers.

Walk-in sellers.

Public agencies.

Environmental programs.

Victor sold personal assets to contribute.

One vacation property.

Two investment holdings.

A vintage car collection.

Reporters framed it as sacrifice.

Victor disliked the word.

“Paying for reforms inside a company I own isn't sacrifice.”

His board stared.

He had become less enjoyable at meetings.

More useful.

Sloane Recycling entered a restructuring plan that reduced profit sharply.

Recovery percentages dropped.

Premium-metal margins fell.

Managers complained.

“We look inefficient.”

Victor answered:

“We were measuring stolen pounds.”

That ended the discussion.

Leo visited the restructured yard once with his technical-school advisor months later.

Not to work.

Educational tour.

Hard hat.

Safe distance.

The steel container remained.

S-418.

Fresh plate welded near its base:

TARE 1,760 LB.

No software override.

Leo touched the metal.

“This is the one?”

Victor nodded.

The repaired side covering hid the old tear.

Leo remembered Dale’s boot.

The crushed lunch.

The envelope.

Victor said:

“We thought about removing it.”

“Why?”

“Bad history.”

Leo looked at the tare plate.

“Leave it.”

Victor was surprised.

“Why?”

“So nobody has to remember the story to know the right weight.”

Victor smiled.

That sentence eventually became internal training.

Reform shouldn't depend on remembering villains.

It should make cheating harder mechanically.

New workers didn't need to know Dale.

The container simply weighed what it weighed.

No private interpretation.

Leo watched an adult seller bring copper pipe.

Truck on scale.

Outside display.

Printed receipt.

Digital record.

Same number.

Classification explained before sale.

Price confirmed.

Seller left.

No SUV.

No security.

No owner.

Nothing dramatic.

Leo smiled.

Victor asked:

“What?”

“That was boring.”

“Very.”

“Good.”

Exactly.

The original day had become memorable because systems failed so badly only an owner’s surprise visit interrupted them.

A good system should not need Victor.

That lesson reached him late.

Still reached him.
