Richard's company issued a statement claiming operational misunderstandings.
Elena laughed when she read it.

She hated most of it.

A donor foundation offered an award.

Ava's mother brought a drawing.
A nurse under a giant blue shield.
Elena smiled.
She placed it in her locker.
Not the lobby.
Ava's illness wasn't branding material.
Samuel's widow appreciated that.
The hospital offered Elena a management promotion.
She refused.
“I noticed this because I work where the decisions land.”
She did agree to help design a new clinical-safety office.
Joint authority.
Nurses.
Doctors.
Technicians.
Patient representatives.
Independent funding.
Protected reporting.
Then one board member suggested naming the office after Elena.
She immediately refused.
“Why?” Malcolm asked.
“Because if it works only because my name is on it, it doesn't work.”
He smiled.
That answer stayed with him.
