The Call Before “I Do”

Chapter 01 - The Call Before “I Do”
Daniel Hart was ten minutes away from marrying Vanessa Cole when his phone rang for the fourth time. He had ignored the first three calls, assuming they were another problem for the wedding planner. Then a text appeared beneath an unfamiliar hospital number.
The baby is here. She may not survive the night. Please come.
Daniel’s hands went numb.
Eight months earlier, his marriage to Emma had ended after a private DNA test claimed the child she carried could not be his. Emma swore she had never betrayed him, but Daniel had been too wounded—and too ashamed—to question the result. Within months, Vanessa, the daughter of his family’s largest investor, had stepped into his life with sympathy, certainty, and a plan to save the failing Hart Foundation.
Now Emma was asking him to come to the hospital on his wedding day.
Daniel left the chapel without explaining. Vanessa followed in her white gown, furious and frightened. His mother, Margaret, came with them, insisting that no scandal would be allowed to ruin the family.
They found Emma sitting upright in a hospital bed, pale and exhausted, holding a newborn wrapped in a striped blanket. Her eyes were red from crying, but her voice was steady.
“I did not call to stop your wedding,” she said. “The hospital did.”
A nurse placed a folder on the bed. The baby had been born with a rare blood disorder. Immediate treatment was possible, but only if a close biological relative matched.
Daniel stared at the child. She had dark hair, a tiny dimple in her chin—and startling blue-gray eyes that looked exactly like Margaret’s.
Vanessa stepped forward. “This is emotional blackmail. The test already proved Daniel was not the father.”
Emma looked at her. “The test your family arranged.”
Margaret’s face tightened.
Daniel opened the folder. On top was a new paternity report ordered by the hospital after the baby’s blood type contradicted the old record.
Probability of paternity: 99.99%.
The room went silent.
Vanessa grabbed the page. “This is impossible.”
The nurse calmly took it back. “We repeated the test twice.”
Daniel looked at Emma, then at the baby he had abandoned before she was born. “Why didn’t you tell me you were in labor?”
“I tried,” Emma whispered. “Someone blocked my number from your phone.”
Vanessa’s anger flashed toward Margaret.

And in that single glance, Daniel realized the false test might not have been a mistake.
It might have been a plan.
